Zimt Bakery

When daughter Alina started her own baking business making contemporary and seasonal versions of German Plätzchen (cookies), we built her brand from scratch starting with the name Zimt and spiced it up organically from there. Zimt (German for cinnamon) is a Chicago-based bakery with an active presence at local markets, a nationwide online shop, and special orders for events and private parties. Every aspect of Zimt’s identity was created to reflect the sustainable, eco-conscious heart of the business.
Every hand crafted Plätzchen and jar of fruit spread is made with local, organic, and fair trade ingredients. The entire line of cookies, from the year-round flavors to the seasonal favorites, come in packs of four and boxes of 12 designed for easy gifting. Zimt’s sustainable packaging is all built from reusable, recyclable, and compostable elements, including the au naturel popcorn packing protection. Everything from the boxes to the cellulose wrappers to the inks to the shipping was selected to get their carbon footprint as close to zero as possible.

Zimt began as a response to the social movement #BakersAgainstRacism. This desire to give back continues, with 10% of proceeds donated to charitable organizations every month. Zimt’s roots in social media made it very important to ensure a strong presence to tell a cohesive story across every touchpoint.

I grew up seeing my mom’s passion for her work, so it was only natural that I chose to do the branding with her when I started my own business. Working with my mom and her team on Zimt has been an amazing experience—almost as fun as baking with her as a child!
